This learning environment in which students can pursue content which interests them is key to my own educational philosophy, and is central to the Montessori ethos. What I find facinating in the way the NSW History Syllabus is constructed is how there is an obvious struggle between those taht believe the focus of HIstory should be on "thinking historically", that is, learning history as a skill, and those that believe there are things that all NSW students should know "about", ie. facts.

Early on in the Syllabus, the content is flexible enough to allow students to persue their own interests. In the kind of learning environment outlined in your reading, it would also give students the opportunity to learn about other areas of study by monitoring their classmates work too.

While it can be done with the current Syllabus to an extent, I think the real issue is the availability and access of appropriate and well-functioning technology in the puiblic education system. Education, and particularly the integration of ICT into educational environements, is not a priority for the Government, let alone the public. Until such time as it is deemed important, unfortunately I am pessimistic about change.

Katryce, another viable option is to sign up for a laptop lease. lets face it as students it is very rare that we have more that $20 on us at any given time. Even for those students who struggle through working in demeaning jobs still don't really have the cash to even buy a cheap laptop, so the idea of leasing a laptop for a certain price each week could be very helpful.
Ohhh and just one other thing, for anyone who is technologically savy. getting the cheapo laptop isnt a great idea becausethey do not have the efficiency or capabilities of the higher specification models.

i think that ICT can be incorporated by the teacher by using their own laptop and projector. Whilst the students might not have their own computer, the web can be used in a way that the whole class can benefit from it whilst not actually doing it themselves. I did this in a public system school. The cash outlay was entirely on my own shoulders (i took my own laptop, projector and wireless broadband connection), it still gives the students the opportunity to experience the net at school, and the students can review what was shown at home on their own computers.

Ideally this is what would happen, however you then face the problem of students at different levels of technical ability (need to start the training in primary?), students losing or breaking their computer (remember the cheap calculators?).

This is part of the issue that I see with the roll out of the computers for schools program, I worry how useful it is going to be and how much would have been gained if the money had be spent in different areas...

I agree Katryce with the idea that it would be a good I dea for students to carry their digital classroom with them wherever they go. I believe this has great benefits particularly for students from low socio economic backgrounds. After doing my prac at a country schoolI discovered that a large chunk of students did not have access to the technology that you or I may take for granted. Mant of these students were unable to provide their own stationary let alone have access to a computer at home. I believe that a system where students can be issued with laptops at school and be able to take them home under a strict security system is a great idea and allows all students equality in the classroom
